"Faisalabad's crop production and area information"

Pakistan is an agricultural country where the major part of the population lives in rural areas. Due to scarce employment possibilities, underdeveloped education and health infrastructure, migration fron rural to urban areas continues and leads to ever higher demands of food, space and employment. The urban and peri-urban farming not only includes growing of food crops but also aninal husbandry,agro-forestry and horticulture.

Faisalabad is 3rd largest city of Pakistan after Karachi and Lahore. Due to its textile industry, Faisalabad is also known as Manchester of Pakistan,but its agricultural basis in the Punjab where irrigated cropping of wheat, rice, cotton and fodder crops cultivated for livestock prevail, is equally strong.

Total area of Faisalabad is 589755 hectares out of which cultivated area is 475268 hectares. Tje area for forests in Faisalabad is 1174 hectares.
The district of Faisalabad comprises of 5856 km square.

Faisalabad has annual rainfall of 550 mm with maximum and minimum temperature of 50°C to -1°C.There are two main cropping seasons i.e. Winter(Rabi) and Summer(Kharif).

Following crops are major crops grown in Faisalabad:

*Wheat
*Rice
*Berseem
*Maize
*Sorghum
*Sugarcane
*Cotton
*Vegetables

WHEAT:
The total area where the wheat is cultivated in urban and peri-urban areas of Faisalabad is 5.3 lac acres.

RICE:
Rice is cultivated in Faisalabad on 25.9 hec.

BERSEEM:
The total area on which berseem is cultivated in Faisalabad is 10.6 hec.

MAIZE:
Area under cultivation for maize is 25.6 hec.

SORGHUM:
Area for cultivation of sorghum in Faisalabad is 1.10+-1.0 ha.

SUGARCANE:
The area for sugarcane cultivation in Faisalabad is 125. 1 hec.

COTTON:
Cotton is cultivated on the area of 0.88+-0.7 ha.

VEGETABLES:
Different vegetables are grown in Faisalabad on the area of 2.90+-3.1.
